Dear Uncle,
I've finally found a suitable friend for me. His name is Montag and lives next door. And guess what? He is a fireman! It's so strange, Uncle. I've meet a few of fireman before but he is so different from them. Unlike others, he never walks away from me. He always stays beside me and looks at me when I'm talking. And he actually pays attention while I'm blabbing about all sorts of things! We've known each other for few days and I already feel so comfortable and happy talking with him. And he seems to know it too. That we are already so close to each other.
Oh, Uncle! You must meet him! He is a great man and great listener. I really enjoy talking with him! And I think you will too. There are so many things we can teach him! Although sometimes he looks at me weird while I'm doing awkward actions (like yesterday, he saw me tasting the rain), I know he likes them because the next day he never runs away from me, thinking the next door girl is insane. Every morning, I meet him before he goes to his work. Oh, he is such a friendly man that sometimes I forget he is a fireman.
The first day I met him, I boldly asked him if he read any of books he burn. He never seem to have thought about his job much because he merely replied with laughter, "that's against the law!" And I asked him if he was happy. He just laughed and looked at me as if I was an idiot. Oh, Uncle. I wish I can help him to change and see more in life than following the government rules. And I wish I can help him to see and find the genuine happiness in life with books.
Love, Clarisse

Hello^0^
I loved the letter! I think the characteristics of Clarisse were really brought out accurately with the way you wrote the letter. The part where you said that Clarisse wishes she can help Montag to see the genuine happiness in life with books was great. I wish that too. He should recognize the significance of books in our lives instead of the pleasure of burning them. I think Clarisse is a person who can influence him and change his mind about books. In my opinion, all those firemen have been brain-washed by Captain Beatty, including Montag, and they should all try to realize that it is essential for book to exist.
Without books, they would be lost and be wanderers forever in search for the true meaning of life. It appears to me that Montag and the others who live in his reality don't grasp the fact of why they live and are never truly happy. Sure, occasionally, laughter is mentioned by watching the "parlor walls", but is that pure laughter? It's just entertainment and not produced from the genuine happiness of life. I think Clarisse is the only person that is happy beyond doubt. Everyone that exists in Farenheit 451 should have a chance to meet Clarisse in order to uncover genuine happiness.
I'm glad that both Clarisse and Montag had a friend they felt comfortable with.
Despite the awkwardness of what Clarisse does that we see in the book, I can tell that she has a pure heart. Also, I think she is unique in her own way and is not crazy as she says she is. :)

I love Clarisse. She is the most pure breath of fresh air in any novel I have ever read. We all need someone who will point us to the reality of happiness, don't we?
Two stories about Clarisse. In the movie version of this novel made in the 1970's, the character of Clarisse and the character of Millie are played by the same actress. It is like the director was saying that the two women had similar qualities that attracted Montag. Also, in the movie, the director allows Clarisse to live and show up at the end among the "book people."
The second connection was years ago when I taught this book to some sophomores. There was this one young man in class who was hopelessly in love with a girl in class. He admitted it in a journal entry to me and said that when he read the character of Clarisse, he pictured this girl. He was right. Since then, when I reread the book, I see this past student and hope that that young man finally got the courage to talk to his "Clarisse."
